Words of Woofdom- Why do we repeat ourselves, repeat ourselves?
We have all done it. You want your dog to sit and when he does not immediately respond with a sit we repeat “sit,…… sit,……. sit,…….. sit……” It is a common occurrence but a completely unnecessary one. If your dog does not do what you ask right away, he either: a) does not know what you asked or, b) is not interested enough in what you are asking. In both cases, it is our fault and not the dog’s. We have either failed to effectively communicate what we want or it is not something we have rewarded enough to get reliably. When you catch yourself about to say your commands repeatedly, stop and think about what you are asking and why your dog should listen. If you are consistent and reward the behavior effectively, you will get a reliable sit, stay, come, or whatever whenever you ask for it, by saying it only once. By saying it only once.
