Lately we have been asked, how do I get my dog not to sniff? Our answer is we can teach your dog not to sniff, but why would you want to? Dogs don’t see as well as humans but their noses are amazing! Where we smell a stew, they can smell each individual ingredient in that stew. It is probably one of the reasons dogs enjoy their walks much, so why take that away from them? Dr. Alexander Horowitz has a great Ted Talk/short video and a book, “Being a Dog” that is a great read if you want to learn more about how your dog uses that sniffer. It may change your thinking and you may find yourself sniffing your world just a bit more, giving the saying “Stop and smell the roses,” a whole new meaning.
Consider joining our “Mind, Body, Nose” class to help your dog learn to use that sniffer more effectively, add some agility, and some basic behaviors for some overall enrichment. This class is fun for the people too. Or, try some ‘inside games” that teach your dog to use their nose in constructive and fun ways.
