Preparing Your Dog for Vet Visits

  1. Schedule a time when you are not rushed and have extra time. If you or your dog find vet visits stressful, then take time to breathe. Vet visits can be stressful for humans too.

  2. Since you have extra time, take a short walk before your appointment. This gives your dog a chance to eliminate. If you need a fecal sample, you can bring that in, too.  Sniffing can decrease a dog’s heart rate which may help your dog.

  3. Don’t just bring treats, bring extra special treats your dog does not normally get. This could be pieces of cheese or meat. This can make the vet visit more rewarding and less stressful. Bring more than you might need.

  4. Feed your dog treats as you walk into the lobby and the exam room.

  5. If your dog is uncomfortable around other humans or dogs, call the front desk so you can get right into an exam room and not have to wait in the lobby.

  6. Write down all your questions and concerns so you don’t forget anything. Sometimes, our minds go blank in the moment and we don’t remember the questions until after we leave.

  7. Bring appropriate media. Your veterinarian may find it helpful to see a video of your dog’s gait or a picture of its stool.

  8. While waiting in the exam room, practice basic cues with your dog or bring a toy and play. Keep them occupied and engaged with you.

  9. Don’t forget to ask all your food and diet-related questions.

  10. Bring a list of any medications including supplements and over-the-counter medicines. These are important for your vet to know about.

  11. If your dog has medications prescribed for the appointment, remember to give them and note if you need more for your next appointment. Let your veterinarian know how you think the medications are working.

Help make your vet visit as stress-free as possible.
