How to keep those old dog toys seem new?
We do lots of in-home behavior consultations with all sorts of pups. One thing we often see is large toy boxes full of all sorts of dog toys, which is fantastic. However, dogs will often get bored with the same old squeakers and balls. There is a way to keep those old toys seeming fresh and new. Rotate them, putting all but a few away for one to two weeks at a time. Then, reintroduce them to your canine companion once again, in rotation, and remove all of the old toys. So, for example, if you have 20 toys, put 15 away and leave out five. The following week, put those five away and take out another five, and so on. The toys that you had previously put away, will once again seem like new. You can even make this even better if any of the toys can have hidden treats in them. When you reintroduce them, put a treat in them. That will really get your pup’s attention. Just like if a child misplaces a toy and then finds it a few months later it becomes like a brand new item. Old toys can get boring to both humans and canines, alike.
If you do purchase any new toys, it is better to spend a little more on better quality. Lust like anything else, you get what you pay for. A single $20 toy will be better and last longer than any five $4 toys. A quality, well designed toy will last much longer and be safer than a cheap toy. Furthermore, a cheap toy can also be a health hazard if bits and pieces can be torn off and ingested.
