Words of Woofdom – “Look Ma, No Hands!” Hands Free Leash Walking
Today I was out on a run with one of my pups and I saw a woman with a cane walking her dog. The dog was pulling her and her arms were way out in front of her. The harness was a pull harness, meaning it helps, and not hinders, pulling. I stopped briefly to give her a few “Words of Woofdom” about leash walking with a hands free leash. Since there were also some icy patches and I would hate to see her fall. I have to say, since I started using a hands free leash I will never go back to holding a leash for several reasons.
Around this time of year I think about icy sidewalks and know that if my dog ever decided to pull me (“squirrel!”), he is around my center of gravity and I am not going over as easily. My pup is attached to my waist and not an extended arm. I am more stable and more secure in my footing. The second reason is that I have my hands free to dispense treats, pick up my dog’s excrement, look at my phone, tie my shoe and do anything else I need to do. Lastly, I need not worry about my dog leaving my side or dropping the leash by mistake as he is tied to me. If you take my advice, you too will never go back once you go hands free!
