Words of Woofdom- Canine Communication and Growling
How does your canine companion communicate with you? Usually there are two ways, body language and vocalizations, like growling. As a human, we often don’t like our dogs growling or barking and even sometimes punish them for this behavior. If we punish the vocalization, we are cutting off a very important way that canines can communicate with us. So what should we do instead? Pay attention! Try to figure out why your canine is uncomfortable and help him be more at ease. This is similar to what we might do with a child that is screaming or crying. We try to assist the child and manage the situation. This technique works great with our canine companions as well.
